October 2008 News Update Archives

How important is Canadian oil in the United States' fuel and energy mix?

Our next Cross-Border Forum on Energy Issues hosted in partnership with the Canadian Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Global Public Affairs and the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago will address current concerns surrounding the environmental consequences of refining and developing Canadian oil.

The closed-door session on October 2 will include a discussion among 40 to 50 senior energy policy stakeholders from the US and Canada. View the webcasts of past forums and listen to the debate about the challenges confronting the energy sector in North America.

Getting the Word Out

Researchers across Canada are looking for new ways to use our enormous energy reserves – and now they have an online home. Our new Energy Research and Innovation Directory, developed in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, highlights energy research projects and encourages the kinds of collaboration that make innovation and commercialization possible.

The Centre for Sustainable Transportation, Solar Buildings Research Network and the Saskatchewan Research Council are all prime examples of how research is providing fresh options and new products for efficient energy use, proving that solutions to our current energy crises are both essential and possible.

Alberta Energy in the Classroom

The Centre for Energy provides teachers and students with learning resources to help explain and explore the complex energy system that drives Canada every day. We partner with Seeds and Inside Education to produce materials that make learning about energy relevant and connected to issues such as environmental stewardship and sustainable resource development.

Tap into the discussion on how Inside Education is bringing energy into the classroom. Inside Education has also just created a new series of Petroleum Field Trips, funded in part by the Centre for Energy. This DVD series, for grades 7-9 is available free to educators.
